The start of a new year is a time for reflection and hope, a chance to think about where we are and where we want to be. Change is exciting, but it’s also challenging—and that’s okay! Like many, I’ve made resolutions and struggled to stick with them. Over time, and with inspiration from James Clear’s book, Atomic Habits, I’ve learned that lasting change isn’t about perfection; it’s about the process.
It’s about understanding the “why” behind our behaviors. Why do I procrastinate? Skip workouts? Make unhealthy choices? Is it time management? Lack of motivation? Saying yes when I should say no? It’s not easy to confront these patterns—it can even feel painful.
Then there’s that inner voice tempting us with excuses: “Go to the party; the work can wait,” or “Eat the cupcake; it’s just one.” Sometimes, you just have to tell that voice to “shut up” and keep moving forward. This is where the magic happens. Each time you fight that voice, you’re building strength.
Pushing through discomfort, resisting temptation, and sticking to your commitments—especially when it’s hard—is what transforms us. Like gold refined by fire or a diamond-shaped under pressure, the process is meant to make us stronger, leading us closer to our purpose.
Clear encourages focusing on identity over outcomes—ask yourself, "Who do I want to become?" rather than "What do I want to achieve?"
Change starts with small, daily actions. If you stumble, don’t give up. Start again, reflect on what went wrong, and keep going. Give yourself grace, just as God gives us grace every day. Take it one day at a time—you’ve got this!
Here’s to new beginnings!
Thank you for reading!
